I'm not kidding you, I was flabergasted! I was driving to the Farm shop in Bold Heath today taking the scenic rout through Sutton Manor via Bell Lane when I saw what I thought was a couple of greyhounds running through the wheat field on the right of me. They where jumping up and down which made me think they might not be dogs. I had already pointed them out to my wife and thought maybe they where hairs, them having long ears, then suddenly I realised that they were in fact deer. Off they bounded leaping up and down as deer do through the wheat field. What a wonderful sight I thought at the time and definitely a first for me in St. Helens.
I wonder, where they came from and has any one else seen a deer in the area?

The only place ive seen wild deer in the UK is Oxfordshire.Didnt know there was enough open land around here,Maybe they escaped from somewhere? You see some strange things, the garden and pond centre at Rainhill have alpacas, breed them for the wool!

Hi Dick D, Where I live in the US, it's not unusual to see Deer, and it's not a rural area, but it can be dangerous for the motorists and the deer.
Everyone also worries about Lyme Disease. I know a few people who have it.
So although lovely animals, they are a problem.

Here is an article I found, that you might be interested in.

I've seen lots of wild deer around Scotland - they just stand in the middle of the road and stare at you before bounding away again - but nothing in the St.Helens/Bold/Warrington areas.

Are there any attractions with deer in them in that area - somewhere they may have escaped from?

Strangest things I ever spotted were Kangaroo Signs up in the hills around Kyle of Lochalsh. Apparently some bright spark had the idea of farming kagaroos for their meat - but he failed to take into account the fact that they can jump quite high and they all escaped into the mountains .

Deer are a menace to gardeners and small-holders here in the outskirts of Carlisle. You'll find the odd herd coming to within 2 miles of the city centre

DD, don't know were they may have come from, but I was playing golf with a couple of mates at Mersey Valley, which is facing the Griffin on Warrington Rd and we saw a deer, it bounded on to the fairway, then back into the trees, it stood about 4 ft tall, that was about Sept last year.I have seen several at Beacon Park golf club which have been much bigger.:thumb:

there are also deer in knowsley and the countryside around rainford, they are apparently escapees from lord derbys estate that have bred and thrived in the area, one of the best kept secrets are the small clutch in billinge and carr mill woods.

another really uncommon sight are the terns which regularly visit luggy lane dam.

Wow DD, what a wonderful sight Deer in St Helens, I have never heard of that before. I have no idea where they could have come from. I live just down the road from the Ship, maybe they are still in the woods. Maybe it will be possible for one of our Camera buffs to catch them on film.

On the North-East side of Carr Mill Dam - there's an area marked 'Deer Park'. No idea how far back the name goes though.
