A forward pass from Wigan lost Saints the game today, a great game to watch but Wigan should never have won. :(

I have waxed lyrical on the ubuquatas forward pass in RL before on this site.

Unless the RL make referees enforce the rules the game is destined to die.

I mean Die. And die it will. The whole world are seeing forawrd pass after forward pass gp unpunished.

Look at Leeds last night. Two forward passes and a try given.

Look at the ludicrous situations at the the scrum.

The rules dictate the ball must be delivered in the tunnel between the front row.

IT NEVER EVER EVER EVER HAPPENS.

THE REFS KNOW THE RULES they ignore them.

The situation cannot carry on.

I think you're wrong about the scrum feed rule as it now stands - unfortunately, can't lay me hands on my up-to-date copy of the rules.
And, as to dying because of forward passes - dream on. RU has been doing forward passes for the fifty-odd years that I've been conscious of rugby and it doesn't seem to have done them any harm at all.

With three 20,000+ gates today, far from dying the game has never EVER been healthier. With the game being played in the farthest corners of the UK as well as a rapidly growing overseas presence it's in robust good health so stop worrying about rule interpretations

I agree with you gangad, It was an excellent game and as Alan said a good advert for rugby leaugue by the effort put on by both sets of player, however, having said that I like you gangad am sick of Tomkins trapping players arms under his. You would have to be blind not to have seen him doing this continualy through the game.

Another trick of his I really do not like is the way when he comes out of a tackle to play the ball he butts with his head again you would have to be blind not to see it, although the officials don;t for some reason.

The forward pass blatent, yet not one of the three officials saw that either. What do they have to do go up and tap them on the shoulders, and say going throw a forward now. Do you think they would then take notice.

Having said all that the game was excellent. Saints played really well, it was a shame that it was marred by those incidents. I also think the ref had a brilliant game, he let the game flow, which made for quick play of the balls and good attacking rugby.

Leaving aside the obviously forward pass (and I agree with Hort's post except the bit about RL dying because of it) my biggest concern was the late challenge on Wheeler by Hoffman. It was late and it was intentional.
Losing him and Wello had us in disarray although Robes stepped up well.
Not playing TP and Jammer early on in the second half probably led to the Goons tries.
Oh and Steve Hampson running straight across Jamie Foster's line of vision whilst he was attempting the last conversion was gamesmanship of the lowest order. Tosser.
Magennis played well as did Tom Makinson.
The futures as bright as Jamie Fosters orange boots!
Remember we have Pryce, Gaskell, Perry, Flannery, Eastmond (yeah I know) Clough and god knows how many else out injured.
And I've heard a whisper that a certain player may well be disciplined for off-field activities.
COYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst thing about Hampson running past foster was the comment by Stevo "how smart was the water carrier then" disgusting!

Here is what it says in the laws of the game.

The ball shall be put into the scrum from the
the Referee’s side by holding it in a horizontal
position with a point in each hand and rolling it
along the ground into the tunnel formed by the
opposing front row forwards.

You can find the Laws here:

http://www.therfl.co...book_2007_%20(2).pdf

Where it will also inform you that a forward pass results in a penalty not a scrum. Its only a scrum if the forward pass is unintentional.

Absolutely impossible for a ref to discern whether a player passes forward intentionally or not.

But, in theory, refs in RL have to make that decision for all infringements of the rules - 'cos the rules are, if an infringement is deliberate it's a penalty; if not, it's a scrum.
That's why the notes for refs have 'rules of thumb' like forward passes are generally deemed not deliberate in the UK (Aussie refs, I think I'm right in saying, deem them deliberate and are more prone to award penalties). Offside, on the other hand, is nearly always deemed deliberate and gets a penalty rather than a scrum.
