Corner of Cyprus Street/Kemble Street were a row of three or four shops. First was Lizzie Mawdsley, sweet shop, the only other one I remember there was a cobblers. Shops demolished in late 50's
Molyneux Drive from left to right seperate building Co-op, then block of 5 or 6 shops Can only recall 5 if there were 6! Johnny Ward's Newsagent, Bakery (Foster's?) Neville's Chemist, Freedie Houghton's butcher (Mum used to call him Freddie Fly - possible reference to amount of flies) a chippy, separate building at the end - Melia's supermarket, later Nevin's
Other shops I remember - Bloor's bike shop Kemble Sreet, Beesley's ironmongers in Market Place, Roland beesley used to deliver paraffin in a beat up Bedford van, Miss Range's wool shop between Longster's chemist and a camera shop (Perkin's?)

Molyneux Drive chippy was Harris's.

Funny reading Mr H's post and seeing the namess - Range, Beesley, Mawdesley - because these names occur throughout Prescot history and all have a mention on my Prescot Roll of Honour.

I always used to use Perkin's for film developing, up to around 1980 - there weren't many options back then. But he also helped me to understand photography and was always happy to talk to you about what you might be doing wrong when pics didn't come out as you expected.

What about Bert Heighway's in Cross Lane, think he used to rent washing machines out, as well as his shop.

Didn't he use to drive around in a station wagon with his washing machines?

Oh Yes!!! I also remember there was a little shop over the road from the Carrs, facing the car park, I think it was in a row of terraced houses.

Heighways in Cross Lane also sold bicycles, if my memory is correct
Petrol station bottom of the dip in Cross Lane - Thelma's; can't remember husband's name
Otty Ward's Kiosk, top of South Avenue
Wedgewood's, Kingsway just past the railway
Row of shops at corner of Manchester Road and Hall Lane, possibly early to mid 60's
Rose Cottage, Shaw lane - between Hall Lanr and Bryer Road sold flowers
Dragon Lane End of Cross Lane - row of about 4 shops, I think there was a vat and a paper shop
I think someone mentioned the Maypole which was next to my doctors - lovely chap - Innocence O'Ryan and his brother Michael
Snyders, St Helen's Road
Sweet shop Bottom of Houghton Street used to sell penny and ha'penny drinks of pop

This time of year in the late 50's, you would possibly find my mate David and myself outside Rimmers drooling; far beeter than looking in an Argos catalogue. There was a small toy shop in Ecclestone Street next door to Ainsworth's sweet shop

Mr H
My doctor as a lad was Eno O'Ryan (could it have been foreshortened from Innocence)
The toy shop was Babyworld and the sweet shop Simpers, I think Ainsworth's was elsewhere( JVY may confirm this). I concur about Rimmer's they sold Viking Cycles. Sid Bloor sold Dawes. I was at school with Otto's grand children

Les,

O' Ryan's were my Mum's family doctors for donkey's years I remember being sent on my bike to deliver a sympathy card when one of them died, think it was Fairholme Ave off Old Lane, Oh and the O' Ryan's liked the Old John Barleycorn, I remember the smell of alcohol from them vividly.

TL, spot on with 'em liking a drop of the hard stuff. But they were first class doctors, proper old school. Eno saved my mum's life when she contracted pneumonia after having me. I have a sneaky idea that's why I'm an only. :)
