Hi Leschip and Mr Hippo

Dr Innocent O'Ryan was my dad, who passed away August 14th 1964, I was only 8 months old at the time so reading other people's reminiscences is something special. Dr Micheal was in fact my father's nephew, my cousin who sadly passed in 2009.

My first job on leaving School in 1939 was in the B I C Employment Office the Head was a Lady dont remember her name I then graduated to the EFD as a time Clerk.for a short while before leaving to serve my apprenticeship

I may have missed them but are there any memories of the B I C Staff Guild Stores on here.
and does anyone remember Tyrers Outfitters in Prescot

I Remember two nice girls who were good dancing partners, one name Strettle from Cable Road the other name Briscoe from Dragon Lane.

The toy shop was Babyworld and the sweet shop Simpers, I think Ainsworth's was elsewhere

The toy shop was Babyworld and was run by David Gornall from Eccleston who was in the same class as me at school. His father owned the Babyworld 'Empire' with shops in St Helens, Ormskirk and Southport. All long since gone as both David and his father are both dead. The Prescot shop used a house in Vicarage Place as a storeroom - I think it was the Old Vicarage where the Vicar of Prescot lived before the new Vicarage was built close to the Catholic Church in Vicarage Place in the late 50's. The storage accommodation was unsafe and only the bottom story could be used.

As far as I know the sweet shop referred to has been called Simpers, Inksters, Ainsworths and Hudsons dependant on which decade you are talking about !

John

Number 8 Vicarage Place was the Babyworld storeroom. I used to deliver the post there in the late 60's. John it was Simpers in my day (and yours?)

Not old John, just maturing nicely. Thanks for the list Stephen, some names were still around in the 60's/70's.

O'Ryans was my GP before I left for Liverpool and my brother lived in the flat upstairs when he was first married, he manned the phones for the overnight on calls, his wife was a nurse.
