Hello - I am new to this site. Could anyone help me to find information about my ancestors who lived in Prescot in the early 1800's.My great great garndparents, Joseph and Mary Ann Lawton were married at All Saints Church (Rainford) in 1833 and their children were born in Prescot. Joseph was a watchmaker.I have found the family on the 1841 census living in Camp Prescot, which I believe was a poor district of town. Does anyone know this family?

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure that some of the genealogy folk who visit regularly will be able to help with family links.

I am in the middle of researching "The Camp", which is generally accepted to be not much more than a shanty town between Eccleston Street and Kemble Street (Hillock Street back then). The bulk of the inhabitants were of Irish origin, many recording their occupation in the census as Hawker, Mug Seller, Rag & Bone Man, etc.

Though (as always), I stand to be corrected on this, I suspect that "The Camp" ceased to exist around the mid-1860's, which conicided with what could be called a "building boom" around the town.

I'm analysing the 1851 census, which is the first "meaningful" census, and once this is complete I'll post some information on the forum, so make sure you pop back in to check things out.

John

I'm pretty sure that the address is "Long Row". It's a lot clearer on the Enumeration Description

Sorry, just noticed that 'The Camp' still existed in the 1871 Census, but not by the 1881

Stephen - you are correct, it is Long Row.

Family still there in 1861 - address now reads Long Row, Hillock Street, Prescot.

Addition to family is Elizabeth aged 8

Hello - I sent an email in reply to jvy20 who had requested information about my Lawton family, I wonder if you received it? Maybe I should have put the reply here?

Hi,

Baptism of a James Yates 5 July 1835 at Prescot St Mary.

James son of James Yates & Ann - 74th Regiment of Infantry in the East Indies is written across the Adode and Occupation columns.

Will see if I can find him 1841.

Regards

John
