Not sure about the Crosville Buses there, RD - I DO know that the St.Helens Bus No.93 (St.Helens-Prescot-St.Helens via City Road/Hard Lane/Dentons Green/Eccleston) used to have its 'Prescot Terminus' at the side of The Hope & Anchor. It only ran once an hour and my mum used to get it at 10.20pm when she worked at the pub.

I used to get the No 93 to school (West Park) from the side of thr H&A. I also remember (as discussed on previous threads) the Trojan Cafe which used to be next door, with a "Magic City" pinball machine.

And for the anoraks amonst us, the original Hope and Anchor stood on the opposite corner of Hope Street (now an insurance shop?).

Hi,

This isn't strictly correct. The street that runs down the side of the Hope and Anchor from High Street to Prescot Cables ground is Hope Street. The ground itself and the ATC are both in Eaton Street. Eaton Street runs parallel to High Street.

At one time the 'owner' of Prescot Cables was a George Glover - he took over on the understanding the ground would be named Valerie Park as this was the name of his wife

The Crosville buses did turn round there - certainly the H8

John, as usual you are spot on. But do you remember the old Cables stand burning down? I think every kid in Prescot witnessed it,

Les,

Certainly do - pretty sure I was on my way home from school when it happened. Being a wooden construction it went up like a bonfire

If my memory is not playing tricks on me, weren't there 3 fairly large, local fires within a short space of time - Pilks Ravenhead Works, The BI at the top of Bridge Road and Cables stand?

MrH, I think the BI fire was in the BCR log yard and was a bit earlier than the stand going up in flames.

Thinking of the Hope and Anchor, I have a vague memory from around 1972/1973 of a little bookies "shop" somewhere around the back. I'm not sure it was fully legit and was really tiny, just a little room with some feller taking bets

It was the first time I'd ever been in a bookies so I didn't have a clue. Used to do 5p each way and other big bets!

Anybody else recall this place?

Ste, I remember a betting shop in that area, but was it not behind Hunts/Garths? Or am I confusing 2 places??

You might be right, Les.

Down Poor Man's Weint (Garth's Alley), perhaps? Sound more plasuible than at the back of the pub !!
