I remember those :)
Smiths Farm was demolished in the 70 but when I lived at Mersey St I remember the farmer crossing the cattle over Newton Road to the field behind the plots in Mersey St.
It must have been a bit dangerous because it was just over the brow of the hill.

I bundled sticks for Johnny Towey and delivered them once in a while around Earlestown, poor horse must have been knackered after dragging that cart up Common Road.
We used to ride it bareback on a Sunday afternoon in the field at the side of his plot, it could be a viscous thing at times!

Do you remember Matty?
He lived in the cottages across from Bobby Leylands farm and used to walk up and down Newton Road a few times a day.

I remember Matty very well from the 60's.
Was he born that way or was it an illness.
All us kids used to shout out "Hello Matty" as he neared. All in harmless banter. Can't see most of todays kids treating him with the same respect !

I also remember a huge American car that used to come flying down Newton road until one day it knocked down an old lady. It was never seen again.

I've no idea if Matty was born like that or what trejan.

The only American car I remember was Billy Fury's, he was going out with a girl that lived opposite Derbyshire Hill school in Waring Ave and everytime he appeared he got mobbed

Here's a blast from the past with Johnny Toweys yard at the bottom right, Parr Labour and the garage that used to be at the terminus top left :)

That's Derbyshire Hill labour as Gilly points out :)

Oops, you're right Gilly, I meant Derby Hill Labour.
I knew there was something wrong when I posted but couldn't figure out what it was.

I never was good at texting

Seeing as the topic is titled 'Newton Road' I'll add this one, Newton Rd is running from the top left corner and ending at it's junction with Waring Ave.

Thanks for that last pic, Le. Can see my auntie Molly's house in Derbyshire Hill Road on there. Lovely lady who we used to visit in school holidays to play with her kids. Spent hours down The Flash/Havannah Lane. We used to walk down Havannah Lane, along the Brook and then back along Southport Street - it felt as though we'd been out for ages, but was probably only around 2hrs or so lol.

Can also spot The Engine where my cousin had her wedding reception in 1969 - quite a few years after we used to go 'tossing over the bars' on the bridge over the Sankey Brook.

Martin Towey had a plot near Smiths farm. My dad had a plot (In the picture above next to the bowling green of the Engine Inn) One of my regular jobs was to muck out the stables at Martin Toweys and wheel barrow the horse tsih to my dads plot, (kids today dont know they are born) meanwhile my dad Martin Towey and Tommy Twist (Who lived in the houses between Toweys plot and Newton Rd) where nicely esconced in the Engine. Mrs Smith had a club foot and used to sell veg etc from the farm side door, the club foot never slowed her down when it came to taking money. When the farm wa demolished she moved into the first new bungalow further down Newton Rd (I remember hearing the Smiths put up the land for all the bungalows and in return got theirs free) Martin Towey had a plot near Smiths farm. One of my friends from Cowley lived in the houses facing the Horseshoe and roundabout - her name was Jean Power. I know the family lived there around 1965/66.

I mentioned Tommy twist in my post above.
Did any one else have their hair cut by Tommy.
My dad bought Tom a pint and he cut our hair about once a month, cold wet flannel on your neck and then the dubbers came out.
Took half the skin of your neck he did.
Probably solely because of Tom that the 60s became the era of long hair
I believe his second wife Winnie still lives in Parr Mount Court

(If you read this Winnie I am only kidding Tommy was a true character and gent and I believe spent the best part of 50years at UGB)
