OK, I know I need to get out more and stop looking at old maps, but here's another question.

The image shows the south side of Hillock Street (now Kemble Street) from Snig Lane (Sewell Street) all the way along to Warrington Road.

The 1851 Census has a description of this area in Enumeration District 3d, which reads,

"Part of the Northern side of Hillock Street, commencing at the East corner of Bond Street, Parkers Square, The Camp, The Southern side of Hillock Street including Factory Yard, Shuttle Alley, The Long Row and Tan Yard, the Southern side of the Toll Barrs and part of the South side of Market Place, ending at Mr Thomas Buttons Shop."

Towards the lower right of the map, there appears to be some sort of a structure outlined. Any guesses as to what it was? There might be a clue in the census list which says "Factory Yard". Was it a factory? It's 40 years before the BI turned up in town, so what was it? I only have the image in low resolution, so can't read any of the text close to the building, though it does look like it says "Yard" in it.

Are you able to compare it alongside more recent maps, Stephen :( . Maybe the Museum or Library will have some useful information. What about a Trade Directory for around that time?

Sorry Stephen, a bit flummoxed with this one, but there was a pottery around that area

Le200 is "the Man" when it comes to old maps, so I'm hoping he'll pop along and help with regard to anything more recent. The BI was on that spot by the end of the 19th century, so I suppose it needs a map between 1848 and 1898 that's a bit clearer.

The only trade directory I have for Prescot if from 1918, so doesn't cover this.

Another query is about the name of the road which runs North to South to the right of the "building". It is named on the map, but my lo-res version can't be read.

Based on the census description, I had thought it might be "The Long Row", but the type doesn't appear to match that name.

I will scroll through the census entries for 1851 and see if I can figure it from there.

Hi Stephen,
Tann yard as Halj says, was a cotton manufacturer and also a tannery was located in that area. Both business's would use the pond for various processes. There was also a pottery on this site aswell and possibly more than one close to it.Certainly, on the later map you will see that the Prescot pottery was built on the site and was a large industrial set-up which produced amongst it's produce, chinaware. This later pottery was established by the Twist family and other pottery family links.Earlier pottery families who had a business on site or next to tann yard where the Woods family and the Webster family, both potters.
Potter.

I have overlaid 3 old Prescot maps onto Google Maps and I've just uploaded them onto my web site.

One word of warning - they have worked fine on my PC with no problems. On the website the main map renders correctly but if you zoom out there are some spurious tiles dotted around - I'll try to correct this ASAP.

The maps are
  • a basic printed black and white OS Map of 1925
  • a hand drawn large (6ft x 6ft) highly detailed map of a small part of Prescot circa 1890. The original is in very poor condition but I've tried to recreate it using Photoshop.
  • A 4 part set of 1:1056 scale maps of Prescot circa 1851. These are in better condition but the paper on which they are drawn is now a very dark brown making it difficult to reproduce. Again I'm trying to recreate it using Photoshop. I've still got a long way to go but it gives a view of most Prescot. The version posted is just a snap shot of how it currently stands and includes a lot of background clutter.
I've also uploaded a transcription of Slaters 1851 Trade Directory detailing Prescot. I also have Directories for 1795,1819 and 1829 which I'll upload ASAP.

Hope these help

halj - can I get a copy of your map - it may help fill in some of my gaps - also I'll try and overlay it on Google if you want
