My great grandfather John Begley was born in 1856 in St Helens (can't find his birth, and family legend says he was actually Irish). He lost an arm whilst working in a glassworks. On the few census records I can find him (1891, 1901 and 1911) it doesn't mention any glassworks. In 1874 (from his marriage certificate) he is an Engine Torter (what is that?); in 1891 he is a General Labourer; in 1901 he is a Stationer; and in 1911 he is a Plate Cleaner for Imperial Tobacco in Liverpool. So I deduce that he lost his arm when he was an Engine Torter (!), and after that took any job he could. Is that feasible, do you think? Would a glassworks have such a job as engine torter? My dad once drew a picture of him as a "cocky watchman". Is that a nightwatchman?

Any thoughts? Thanks for any input.

Jeanetta
