The town or even city that has produced the most writers/authors about the game of rugby league must surely be St Helens. Until about a month ago I made it twelve. Then Phil Howard had his first novel published, called "Better Than All the Rest. A Mother Fights For Her Son", which Ray French described in his column in League Weekly recently as 'an excellent and moving read". Now I have just heard that Alan Tucker has pushed the number up to fourteen with his book about the history of Rugby League in Carlisle.
One other interesting statistic is that at least five of us once went to Knowsley Road School.

Maybe it was Miss Henty and Miss Fogo for some of us, but it was probably Mrs Foster in the nursery with her fascinating stories about a pink elephant that she read from a very large book that could have kick started me..

When I was at that famous public school, sadly now demolished, I can remember making some mistakes. Strangely nothing appears to have changed because I have made one up above. Phil Howard's book is called "Braver Than All the Rest" and not "Better Than All the Rest"
