I remember Lennon's well having worked there in the dim and distant past. The first self service store owned by the Lennons was the old Stringfellows shop as pointed out. They also bought the shop on the corner of Claughton Street now the Charcoal Grill. These were the forerunners of the larger store on the old cinema site opposite the Sephton pub.Great days.Fab team of workers.

I remember the Lennon's supermarket in Ormskirk St very well for 2 reasons - firstly one of the supermarket owners (Terry Lennon) daughters was in my class at school and at age 17 she used to come to school in her new sports car! there were a couple of other Lennon's girls at my school and also Dr Lennon's daughter also came to my school (Notre Dame as it was then!), (think he may have been Terry Lennon's brother?) - also more importantly we were NEVER allowed to shop there as, before the supermarket was established, the Lennon family had other shops and managed to deliberately undercut other local grocers shops in the area to such an extent that many were forced out of business - including my grandparents little shop - for that reason we were never allowed to shop at the supermarket - and I never actually set foot in the place ...out of loyalty to my family.

I remember going into Lennons with a couple of friends when I was about 5 or 6, I lived just around the corner in New Cross Street and went missing for a while, we didn't think we needed any money and just started helping ourselves to penny sweets and walked right past the tills until a security guard stopped us, he let us off as he knew we hadn't a clue we'd done any wrong, my mum went bananas when I told her of our shopping spree!

abit to divers in bottles ,nevins ,and a picture of a big tank,
i dont think the garage nevin was of the same family, dont know wether the doctor was,
the registration of one of the nevins was PONIO,reference to his dealings with race horses

The Ormskirk street store had the warehouse on the top floor and had a bad fire in it. the second picture shows Liverpool Salvage Corps outside the shop. http://www.fireflash...lvagecorps.html as for the registration PONIO that was owned by Middlehurst no Lennon.

Great pics firemansam,I worked for Lennons from the day it opened in July 1963 until May 1964 and like you say the warehouse was on the top floor,it had a goods lift that brought you down by the bacon and cheese counters.Love the pre decimal prices in the window.

My better half worked for Lennons in the late1940s/50s and tells me that it was 2 men named Rycroft and Jones who introduced the American Super Market concept to Lennons.
I think they were pioneers in this type of shopping in this Country.
Terry Lennon owned a few fast sports cars.in his time..

At the bottom of Barrow st I can remember a shop there which I think was a Lennon's shop, where Max Spellman use to

be,or was it a Nevins, got me thinking now. Also I think he had a shop on Lord st in Southport where the B&M shop is

now. That must have been in the heyday of the firm.

I'm fairly sure that the shop in Barrow Street was Nevins. (By the standards of the time a supermarket, but probably just about qualify as a large corner shop these days).

You might be thinking of the 'Pets Emporium' which was next to Lennons (or Charcoal Grill as the building became). I lived at the back of there at the time when when the building was Lennons.

The racehorse was called Ashford Lea and was named after the House in Walton Road that Lennon lived in.
