Hello!

I've a question regarding St Mary's in Knowsley and the cemetery (cemeteries?) there. I'm wondering if the Derby graves are in a seperate section of the church grounds, or if the Lords are buried in the same cemetery as the local folks? Is there a burial listing somewhere like the St Helens council has for the cemetery there? I know that my gggrandfather is buried in Knowsley, and worked on Knowsley Estate in the late 19th/early 20th century, but from what I understand, he's buried near the Derby graves, and I'm curious to know where exactly he rests.

Thanks for any info or links to info!
CC

I couldnt find any information for St Marys Parish church records but I would think that Huyton library would have something or they may be kept at the church as I think burials still take place there. I would try contacting the church wardens in the first instance to see if they can help :-

Thanks Ratty! I'll give them a ring perhaps tomorrow. Time offset from here means its....shouldn't you all be heading to bed sometime soon? :P Is either of the two a better option?

Thanks Phyll, nice sites, some of which I've checked out before, a couple I hadn't!

I've also had a look via Google maps/Earth and sort of see where the Derby graves are somewhat seperated, but not all that far from the other portions of the yard. Family rumour has it that gggrandfather is buried near the Derby graves, as he and Lord Derby had some interesting debates and was told someone needs to keep an eye on him. I found it intriguing, and hopefully I can get in touch with someone from the church who may be able to tell me just how near to them he is interred.

Just a follow up note. Thanks again for those numbers Ratty, I called Helen (very nice woman) and she is going to see what she can dig up (no pun intended :D) for me on the grave. Took a bit of work to make the call, as I didn't realize most of the UK numbers were 10 digits and hers is only 9 after the routing bit.

Thanks again!

You're very welcome CC and I hope you find what you need.

Did you know that the 13th Lord Derby invited the artist, nonsense poet and limericist Edward Lear to create paintings of the menagerie of creatures he kept on his estate for posterity, he also wrote The Owl and the Pussycat for Lord Derby's grandchildren.

Ratty, Yes I was reading about just that the other day, when I was looking up Knowsley.
Did you know he was the twentieth of twenty-one children! :yikes:
I always loved his poems, especially "The Owl and The Pussy-cat". I remember learning that at school.

PS. Sorry to digress, but it's kind of connected

Ratty, Yes that interested me too, because my Husband is Epileptic.

Do you know any sites, that show the drawings he did, while he was at Knowsley?
