I've no idea to any of your questions Docker.

I was referring to the picture below of the Transport Cafe in Hall St:

I thought that was a picture of the Transport Enquiries/Toilet place on the corner of Westfield Street/Ormskirk Street :dunno:

I haven't a clue Ollie, I've had never seen that so I assumed it was Hall St - especially with the party... <slaps me wrist> :)

Can anyone else add any info?

I can, Le..Ollie is correct. The main bus depot was in Hall Street, where the buses were garaged but the changeover point for staff at their break times was on the corner of Westfield/Ormskirk St. There were offices upstairs and toilet facilities on the ground floor, which the public could also use. They were the cleanest toilets in the town and the least daunting for a young girl. Opposite the transport block was the Midland Bank, (I believe it is still in use as a bank) and round the corner Lennons supermarket, (pictured) where I worked for a time about 1962/3. There was another Lennons store further along on the corner of Ormskirk/Bridge St.where I also worked opposite an earlier Boots store.

I believe the toilets were in the basement, not the ground floor, is this correct?

Also when the offices were there was it not Griffins furniture accross the road = later to become the bank?

I dont recall any stairs to the ladies.. The front room off Westfield St. was a waiting room with a tiled floor, a couple of bench's and a large wooden table. The toilets were at the back of the building and the offices and stairs through an adjoining room. The gents was in the basement, and I thought partway underneath the ladies block. You're right about the Midland Bank being on the former Griffins site.

What memories the transport offices bring. I used to meet my grandma there, with my mum I presume. We used to sit in there and chat and for the life of me I cannot remember why we would do this. My only thought is that my grandma lived on Clock Face Road and she would come in on the bus and as we lived at the bottom of Alfred St. near Harshaw Park she did not want to walk all that way as it was a bit uphill, so we would meet her and have a chat. Still does not make that much sense and I cannot remember where the bus from Clock Face would pull in. I will have to call my older sister and see if she can fill me in on this as it is driving me mad now. My Gran would only be about 60 at the time, but that was old then. At least that has got better with time. 60 is no age these days!!!

I seem to remember there were stairs leading down and the walls were tiled/ There always seemed to linger a perculiar smell, don't know whether it was the disinfectant that was used. Can't remember much more than that but I know there are others on connect who will jog my memory :roflmao:

The smell was whatever the equivalent of Jeyes Fluid was in those days, maybe it was Jeyes Fluid. Yes there were green tiles. I can only remember the gents toilets but they were well kept, well attended and you could only open the doors by inserting a penny.

My sister tells a story about there being quite a solemn queue of women waiting down there when a woman in one of the cubicles farted loudly and the entire queue started giggling until the giggles turned into uncontrolled shrieks of laughter

Does anyone remember the toilets and stones down there?
I seem to recall going there when I was a nipper and they were decorated with blue patterns all over, were they Wedgewood or something similar?

A bit like the one on the left in this pic:
