Does anyone remember Whittle's Pork Pies? The best in the North West....made to a secret recipe. Nothing in the Supermarkets in my neck of the woods can hold a candle to them alas. A couple of pints of "flat-rib" and a pork pie...heaven

Was this the butchers next to Bullocks bike shop on Liverpool rd, they had an abattoir at

back of the shop and everything was fresh that went into those luscious pies.

The lady who served in the shop poured the hot gravy over the pies as you bought them.

The Whittles I remember was half-way up Duke Street on the left hand side. And I do agree, the best pork pies I've ever tasted

I don't particularly remember Whittles, but Yates' Greer always did good pork pies. Do we still have any of their shops left?

The lady in Lingholme Road (around number 140) , who baked and sold pies/cakes from her own home, did delicious pork pies too - and she would pour the pork juices over the pies once cooled down.

Hi, John N here. I don't know about the StHelens Whittles pie shop but there was one in Eccleston st in Prescot.
My mum called it the Pork butchers (they only sold pork products) They made the same pies and filled them with hot juice from a large enamel jug. They also sold bacon,Ham, sausages, tripe and something we called slavvery ? or savory ducks. They looked like Brains Faggots and were delicious.Lovely memories of a bygone age.

I agree the pork pies prepackage and frozen do not come close to whitles pork pies. It makes you wonder how many of the old fashioned butchers there are left.

Hello John N - don't think I've said Hi before - welcome to the site.

That shop in Eccleston Street, Prescot was a 'Yates Greer' and they were a specialist Pork Butcher - don't know if it's still there though. You're oh-so-right, their pork pies were very mouth-watering.

They still have a shop in St.Helens Market, and very popular it is too :). Their 'savoury ducks' were always delicious, but haven't had any in recent years.
