There were far too many 'hardmen' demanding protection money to keep trouble out of them. When Managers/Breweries tried to improve the facilities, the locals didn't seem to appreciate their efforts. One pub on the main road, was sold off and became a 'Wetherspoons' - not long after, even they decided to get out and sell it off altogether. Not often that Wetherspoons admit defeat and leave a place.
There's very little room for an honest Landlord/Landlady these days. The business has been squeezed dry through cheap ale sales in supermarkets/off licences, bully boys and scallies who make their money elsewhere and use a pub as 'cover' for their dodgy dealings.
I'm not saying that ALL managers/landlords are dishonest, I'm just saying that business and regulations are so tight these days that it's difficult to make an honest living/modest profit out of a pub.

Hi Joe/ when you mentioned the Nelson it took me back way back, we use to occasionally
visit this pub in the distant past,It always felt a cold place possible with having tiled
floors, still it has had a good run for this era.

After the game we asked Geoff where he could recommend in Huyton for a pint on the way home. His immediate answer was "Preston!"

I suppose the pub could have been The Union - would be logical I guess! - but I was only a young kid and can't remember.
I do recall there being a little shop called "Lucy's" in the street whose name I can't recall!

Thnaks Gilly - not sure it was either of those though. Was the Exchange Vaults also known as "Chessie's?" I do remember both of those pubs (from drinking in both on rare occasions when I was old enough to!) but I'm sure there was another; we lived at 75 Union St, and my recollection is that the pub I'm referring to was more or less opposite, just a bit further up the street.

There's a photo on there too. How far was Cooper Street from Union Street?
Just looked on the map, Cooper Street is the other side of North Road,
so is that a misprint on the Pubs list.

Wasn't The Exchange right at the top of Union Street?
