Hello Jinx, there is not many pubs making a living now, there are plenty of pubs now dont open in the afternoons, most of them do well at weekends if they have sky sports there, plus it depends on the price of a pint,in the last couple of weeks in St,Helens alone three bars have shut down,Nelson,Chloes,Warehouse,i used to go in the last two on saturday nights and they where packed out, during the week they did not sell enough beer to pay the bar staff.

Lots of pubs in the Huyton area have closed down in recent years - hardly any left at all. I'm sure many people would say it was for the best  .

There were far too many 'hardmen' demanding protection money to keep trouble out of them. When Managers/Breweries tried to improve the facilities, the locals didn't seem to appreciate their efforts. One pub on the main road, was sold off and became a 'Wetherspoons' - not long after, even they decided to get out and sell it off altogether. Not often that Wetherspoons admit defeat and leave a place.

There's very little room for an honest Landlord/Landlady these days. The business has been squeezed dry through cheap ale sales in supermarkets/off licences, bully boys and scallies who make their money elsewhere and use a pub as 'cover' for their dodgy dealings.

I'm not saying that ALL managers/landlords are dishonest, I'm just saying that business and regulations are so tight these days that it's difficult to make an honest living/modest profit out of a pub.

Hi Joe/ when you mentioned the Nelson it took me back way back, we use to occasionally

visit this pub in the distant past,It always felt a cold place possible with having tiled

floors, still it has had a good run for this era.

Think pubs are dwindling in numbers by the week, sign of the times. The strict drink drive rules, and been able to buy cheap alcohol from supermarkets have put the final nails in their coffins. Walked down to the Ship in Haydock couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night and the place was practically empty, staying in seems to be the new going out.

Ollie your post reminded me of watching Carlisle RL play Huyton at Alt Park in the 80s. The Huyton Chairman (player, coach and groundsman also!) was Geoff Fletcher who kept pigs near Saints ground.

After the game we asked Geoff where he could recommend in Huyton for a pint on the way home. His immediate answer was "Preston!"

Pubs in the soaps get more unreal all the time. Can you imagine people like Rita, Emily, Norris and Audrey in The Rifle every tea time?

Does anyone know the name of the pub that used to be on the fork of the road in Union St (and what the name of the other road was!)

I suppose the pub could have been The Union - would be logical I guess! - but I was only a young kid and can't remember.

I do recall there being a little shop called "Lucy's" in the street whose name I can't recall!

Thnaks Gilly - not sure it was either of those though. Was the Exchange Vaults also known as "Chessie's?" I do remember both of those pubs (from drinking in both on rare occasions when I was old enough to!) but I'm sure there was another; we lived at 75 Union St, and my recollection is that the pub I'm referring to was more or less opposite, just a bit further up the street.

On the Pubs List, Exchange Vaults listed as Cooper Street, but I think it was on Union Street.
There's a photo on there too. How far was Cooper Street from Union Street?

Just looked on the map, Cooper Street is the other side of North Road,
so is that a misprint on the Pubs list. :dunno:

Wasn't The Exchange right at the top of Union Street?

There was also a 'Hen & Chickens pub in the area, the easiest way to find what you're looking for is here:
