Does anyone remember the name of the Coffee Bar that was halfway down Market Place, on the same side as the hardware shop? For the life of me I cannot remember its name, it was up and running in the '60's. Also the name of the restaraunt that was located at the Huyton end of Windy Arbour Road, i think it was near to where the Village Hotel (Logwood) is now standing? Did it meet a sorry end in the'70's?
Les :(

Les

The only thing that springs to mind for the Coffee Br was "The Rendezvous" but I think that might have been in Eccleston Street, a few doors along from Lennons supermarket. I do remember the hardware shop, though.

Les chip.
,the name of the cafe in the market place in prescot was called Pop,s.It had a jukebox, and we drank oxo with pepper in(dead hard in those days)Horlicks was another favourite ,that was in the 50s.I left prescot when i got married in 1962 so i dont know if it changed names.Stephen the rendevous was a couple of doors up from the sun inn another great venue in the 50s allways packed out and again it had a jukebox of course, the coffee bars were the big thing in those Great happy days when rock and roll was king.Hope this helps you .

Hello Paula, glad you had a smile, and yes it was a much simpler time,no drugs, and all the rubbish thats going on these days.I can taste that oxo and pepper now and the beauty of it was it was very close to The Red Lion.We were old enough to buy a beer but still chose an oxo with pepper.Ithink the rock and roll on the jukebox helped a lot.Happy Days.

Thanks Jimro. You must have been dead 'ard OXO and Pepper! Ah, that Juke Box, that's what got me thinking in the first place, it was the only one in town (I think) but I was just a lad and way way to young to go into pubs.
JVY I'd could not remember the name of the hardware shop so thanks for that. Do you know if there was any tie in between Beesley's shop and Beesley and Fyldes??
Regards to all,
Les :)

Les Chip my brain came into action tonight after a couple of whiskeys(we ran out of oxos)before it was pops it was Tonys(just in case someone older than me has a go).I think tony was an Italian and he was friend of my brother Eddie.there was another coffee bar in Prescot at the time as i said in a one of my earlier posts(the Rendevue which also had a jukebox)but i,m guessing it closed well before your era.

Jimro, the Rendevous was in my era, but thanks anyway. I remember it as being painted in horrible shade of green, both inside and out, not a welcoming sight. My parents went ape after they found out that I'd been to a coffee bar-- 11 was far too young to be going to "such places". Can anyone confirm that they where dens of "sin and inequity". If so what did I miss out on

I think the problem with coffee bars, in parents' eyes, was that very often Teddy Boys hung around in them.

LES I think the oxo was too strong especially with pepper in thats why they went mad at you.To be honest all the times i went into pops and the rendevous i never ever saw trouble, all everyone wanted to do,even the Teds ,was listen to the music. It seems hard to believe but it was so exciting just listening to these guys from the states and of course our own Stars Tommy Steele,Cliff,Lonney.Brilliant happy days.I was,nt a Ted by the way it was on the way out about then, i had a DA.a TC.Itie suit, shorty mac,the works,God how i loved myself posing outside the Lyme House on a Saturday nights and to cap it all i could only afford to go in the 9 pence seats at the bottoms. Most my spend 10 bob was going to Peter Pells the Tailors in Old Swan.God just like the song says. I wish I was eighteen again.

An occasional visitor to thios site, my Uncle Maurice (Nulty) was a Teddy Boy back in the day. I don't remember it but my dad always told me that Maurice and the Black brothers were local Teds.

I also remember the Rendezvous being green, but wasn't everywhere painted that same shade back then?

I remember Freddy Starr saying some years ago in an interview that he used to go to the Coffee Bar close to The Sun, and he also mentioned it as having one of the early juke boxes.

Ray's Cake Shop is STILL there - opposite the toilets (though they are closed now!).

Ray's has a coffee/tea area inside as well as the shop side and are still known for their quality :).
