Honey, the seats have recently been recovered and Graham is slowly but surely redecorating. However he is stuck in his ways and believes it should remain as it used to be a traditional English steak house. He strongly opposes the new fangled approach of a pint and a slice of beef masquarading as steak concept that is prevalent in the new pubs/diners.I personally think the food(steak)is very good and although dated decor, the service is quite good.A quite refreshing change from Indian/chinese(which i love by the way). The head chef,John is open to criticism/suggestions and indeed all the staff helpful.£ for £ the charcoal is probably better value than most of the cheap meal deal pubs and off course it's local and st helens through and through

I too prefer a good traditional steak in the right ambience but I'm afraid ours wasn't up to scratch, the lounge hasn't changed in years, on our last visit there was only one other table occupied when at one time the place used to be full! We found it quite expensive overall, I like to enjoy my meal in a nice setting not like I was in someone's back kitchen.

I've been to a few of those pub deals and the food was like cardboard, never again! The Charcoal used to be renowned for their steaks and there's no excuse for serving any that are inferior considering the price yet they did to us and we wont be back

Swan at Burscough "Superb and Excellent Value for Money"
No it is not in St Helens but our so called Pub / Restaurants want to go there and see what they should be doing and then we would all spend our hard earned money with them here in St Helens.
Book a table if you want to go Fri Sat or Sunday otherwise you might not get in!!!!

Charcoal Grill I bet they are still serving the same old carrots and peas for veg, plus do they still have those plates full of nuts on the lounge tables, urghhhhhhhhhhh, some of the nose picking hands i have seen dipping into them and sneezy noses all over them. Eat them at your peril!
Its 2011 not 1965 Wake Up or Go to the Wall Charcoal Grill

I do recall something about that didn't somebody refuse to pay or something like that and they didn't take to kindly to it and went after him with a meat cleaver or is that my overactive imagination piecing together bit i heard. Dickie Glovers was just opposite the theartre, Gilly seems to have a better memory than me he could probably tell you exactly where, but trust me Phylll you would have loved the fish and chip suppers they were brilliant :thumb:

Dickie Glover's was not directly opposite the Theatre it was part way down the block going towards the Rivoli. When we had been dancing and acrobatting at the Saxon Troupe in the Theatre Buildings we used to go over for chips to accompany our walk home.

Nobodys mentioned the two chippies at the back of the Sefton in the town centre . Maybe some of u youngsters wont remember . Think they were Blaylocks and The Bears Paw. Can anyone verify this. Been in both , never had a bad meal. You can have all your Indians and Kebab shops. Good old British fish and chips ,the staple of the working man

Yes as you walked down Ormskirk Street from the Sefton the Bears Paw was on the right hand side and Blaylocks opposite - both were delicious, especially on a cold night walk home

Lymewood Farm pub restaurant in Haydock is great food.

It's excellent value but so good that it is absolutely packed on Sundays. You can choose a large or normal Sunday Dinner at the carvery and as I haven't a massive appetite that pleased me

I seem to recall my auntie mentioning a relative owned Dickie Glovers.
Eileen ???

I haven't been to the Charcoal for donkeys years but I hear it's come back into fashion now and is quite the place to be.
I like the Lymewood midweek and for Sundays it's either Ashfield House at Standish or Houghwood Golf Club.

Quite a few issues over food.Small plates to make you think your getting a lot.Piggies in Lymewood filling their plates then leaving half.Pubs that fill your plate with chips/potatoes.Big thick chips, cold french fries in mcdonalds.so called posh restaurants that fleece you.pubs that leave tables full of dirty dishes and half eaten food.adding a service charge when service is rubbish--not even going down the motorway services line-Dave would kill me for filling up the available space on the website.Lets also not go down the school dinners route.Do miss the trollies that used to go round town on a friday/sat selling burgers etc--no salmonella there eh???Go round the back of some restaurants and see what the kitchen areas are like.
