Two of my cousins, sisters who live together,(nowt funny going on) have a permanent booking at the Charcoal Grill each week, and whenever I go back to Sintellins we always go to the CG, I have never been disappointed with the tucker and always have a couple of pints to wash it down.

Haven't been for years but I loved their baked potato with steak.

I don't honestly think St Helens is renowned for it's culinary excellence though!

My favourite meal depends on my mood. We went to Ashfield House at Standish for Sunday dinner last week and it was excellent as always.
At £13 for three courses in beautiful surroundings it really can't be beaten.
For Chinese it's the local takeaway, especially their hot and sour soup. To die for. Sadly closed for a bit as lady giving birth any day.
For Indian it's the Buraq at Bryn. Unbeatable.

My all time favourites were the clam chowder in San Francisco on Fishermans Wharf and a Greek salad anywhere in Greece in an open taverna on a sunny warm day overlooking the ocean.
I'll be there very soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not been for a while but when we did go never had a bad meal the steak was always cooked as you asked for it. My son and daugher in law always go there for their meals and they have never said that they didn't enjoy it, to the contrary they always come back well pleased mind you that could be getting away from their four beautiful kids for a while :roflmao:

PS Hope you have a great time in Greece when you get there Carmalite :thumb:

Only time I ever remember going to Charcoal Grill was back in 1970 and really enjoyed the meal, but I was more of an Indian/Chinese person really. Used to love the 'Koh-i-noor' (changed it's name to the 'Bangladesh') on Corporation Street (by the old taxi office). I remember them having a hand-painted mural of the Taj Mahal on one wall.

Loved that one too Ollie it used to be a favourite of mine and my husband after a night out. It was close to where we first lived when we got married in St Thomas Square, demolished now, but when we lived there it was nice upstairs though and not practical for a new baby so we moved. I digress the tbone steak was brillliant there and always well cooked. Oh No Ollie you've made me hungry again. Need a brew speak to you later love swimmer :roflmao:

Mum and I went there one Easter Saturday at 12.05am for a chicken bhuna - we'd had a 'meat-free' Good Friday were really hungry.

They had a really gorgeous waiter who was only about 5ft4ins tall. He was so polite/courteous and always insisted on helping me on with my coat. At 5ft10ins, I had to bend my knees and lean backwards so he could put it on my shoulders. I did protest quite a few times, but he ALWAYS insisted.

Hmm? I can't recall the Koh I noor ever having an upstairs or being called the Bangladesh! It did, like a few others, display the bangladesh flag when they gained indepemdance A little takeaway called Shapla opened up the road from it,within a year this also become a restaurant.Less than 2 yrs later the Shapla had won the battle for customers. The Shapla's owner(Mark) bought out the Koh I noor and renamed it A Passage To India. When the redevelopment took place,Mark opened The Palace in Duke St.The little Indian at the bottom of Westfield St has had several names,Tandoori Ghar,Marahaja and (I think) the Bangladesh amongst them.I worked on the Shapla when Mark's father bought it,it was previously a cafe called The Poppin. The Koh I Noor BTW started life as a single front restaurant, that expanded by buying Dicky Glovers chippy next door.

I think Swimmer means 'upstairs' as in living on an upper floor at St.Thomas' Square.

The toilets were upstairs at the Koh-i-noor, but they were damn steep - especially if you'd had a few drinks. I was always very aware that there was a table almost at the foot of the stairs, and girls/women wearing mini-skirts had to be very careful how they walked up them.

Ollie is right Gilly, I meant St Thomas Square but it was about four in the morning when i posted. I did however get my Indians mixed up I meant the one opposite Beechams although we have been in the others also. Dickie Glovers amazing fish and chips by a warm fire after a night out at the pics. Loved that place love swimmer. Ollie sounds llike a reallly nice polite guy (waiter)Wasn't there a chinese one also called "The Silver Star" or something like that. You know me and names :roflmao:

There were a few chinese places in St.Helens before I left in 1972, but they did seem to be changing names quite a bit. One on Duke Street (by the Talbot) and another across the road from the Theatre Royal and possibly another in Westfield Street. A few chinese takeaways across the town as well - I liked the one at the bottom of North Road (opposite 'Sirann' Taylor's).
