I'm hoping that somebody can just satisfy my curiosity about a house that I see regularly.

It's down the the hollow at the side of the Manchester Road junction with Liverpool Road. It's a big old place and looks as though it was built by somebody with plenty of money.

Ollie, it is Brooke Bridge House/Cottage. Legend has it that Cromwell slept there. Don't know if it was Oliver or his little known Lancashire cousin Wagstaff,

Hi all,

When I was about 10 ish we used to play round there as well as Brown's Field. One of the girls lived in that house and I remember going in it - can't remember anything particular about it except that to me the rooms looked huge - it is over 50 years ago !!

Google tells me it was built in 1803 and once was the home of the Lawson family

Thanks for the replies - I shall puzzle no longer  .

Only one Oliver Cromwell, but so many tales about his deeds/misdeeds.

I, for one, was convinced that he'd blown Windleshaw Chantry to pieces (with a canonball from Billinge Lump) just because my grandad told me so - my grandad knew EVERYTHING, my grandad did :roflmao: .

Funnily enough, I was just looking at this yesterday on the 1911 census which shows that the house was occupied by Thomas Bulmer, an accountant with the Corporation of Liverpool, and his family. I recall that it was for sale a few months ago, but can't recall the price.

Wow! An accountant with Liverpool Corporation could afford to rent, lease or buy a place like that!! Either wages at that time were incredibly high or ............................

Hi Olliebek.A bit more information on that house in the hollow.
When I was at school (1950's) I used to be friends with a classmate called David Potts and he lived there.
He often invited me down there but i never went.I was terrified of the huge WHITE alsation they had called CARL.
Hope this is some use to you.
Regards John N.
