In reference to the poorhouse in Prescot, set-up long before the whiston workhouse. The inmates as such where from a number of backgrounds.People no longer able to work through sickness or lack of work due to age/illhealth.Mother's unmarried with children but no father.New immigrants with families but no work.Pauper's with no physical way of feeding themselves or families and also vagrants with no place to live.So they covered a multitude of backgrounds and circumstances. In many cases, the oldest generation at this time period where either involved in the chemical industry or pottrey trade. The longterm exposure to highly toxic chemicals produced severe physical and mental health problems. On the registers you will find many listed as imbecile or idiot. That does not mean this had always been the case as many suffered from chemical poisoning through their work over a number of years. It is also interesting to note that at least three of the Master's posts where held by potter name families Glover,Ditchfield and Bradshaw. The poor-house contained a working pottery kiln on-site.
Potter.
Potter.
