Hi

Have you any connection to Patrick & Sarah Shannon they had a son Daniel born April 1st 1831 baptised at Lowe House April 3rd 1831, one of the Godparents was Peter GARVEY, I am researching the Garvey family and would be very interesting to know if you have any info on him please.

Peter was born about 1797 in Ireland I have no connection between Garvey and Shannon any info would be very gratefully received

Thanks

Ron

Hi,

Found the Shannon's living in Poor House Weint. This was off Fazakerley Street since renamed High Street, Prescot.
Not really sure if there was a Poor House in this area.

Regards

John

Whiston Hospital was originally the workhouse if thats what you mean, not far from Snig Lane walking.

The Prescot Union Workhouse that was to become Whiston Hospital only dates from 1837. Previously, Prescot had a poorhouse in/near the town centre. I think that poorhouse dated from about 1700 and closed when the new Poor Laws came into effect after 1834.

Hi,

Rather confusing - Poor House Weint is given as address in Census - a Weint is an alley/jigger between 2 blocks of property that allows access to property built at the back off the main street. I would have thought that the alley at the side of Garth's on High Street close to Hope Street is a surviving example of a Weint. Perhaps at one time it did lead to the poor house - hence the name - but I would have thought that by 1851 it was no longer used as a poor house and was a block of buildings where 'ordinary' people lived.

Regards

John

John

Poor House Weint is indeed the name of the alley running down from High Street to Garth's.

The address is nothing to do with the WORKhouse at Whiston

I had relatives living in poorhouse weint...I found some information in a book in Prescot library which says that prescot was ahead in providing alms houses for families in need, it gave an example of a man who was injured down the pit and with four young children to feed, he was in need of help.
In alms families could stay together whereas in the workhouse that followed families were seperated
weint in german means weeps

The poor house in Prescot was indeed situated close to poorhouse weint and opposite Hope street, just further to the west on High street. It was at some point in the 1700's a pottery worked by James Ditchfield and was also used as a pottery when a poorhouse to generate some income for the inmates, many where potter's and their families receiving poor relief. It is probably where the reference to HOPE street first comes in, as this was their last place of hope. potter

Apologies for posting this but I'm a bit confused.

I've been looking at the Irish in St Helens spreadsheet/1851 census too, and may well have relatives at this place - Poor House Weint, that is. I know it's nowt to do with the Prescot Union Workhouse, but have we established if it is just a lane of sorts, or if it is some sort of institution?

TIA

Le

That's very similar to the 1848 map, but is clearly different. What is the date?
