I have been at a brick wall with one of my ancestors who "disappears" between 1841 and 1851 census'.

James Renton was an Exciseman born in Tranent, Haddington, Scotland on 29 April 1813. He takes up the occupation of exciseman in 1835 and his career takes him to Newcastle where he marries Jane Cowans in 1837 and then moves around Lancashire where his 4 children are born.

James' youngest child (of three surviving)is born in Prescott (noted as St Helens, Lancs on the 1851 census) at the end of 1844. In 1851 Jane remarries and is back in Newcastle upon Tyne.

I cannot find an entry for James' death and I'm hoping a search in the last place he was known to be "resident" will tell me happened to him.

grateful for any help
