I am trying to do some research re Elton Head Road area, the point near to where Suttons (Now Linkway distribution) is, also I don't know where the entrance to Sutton Heath Colliery stood. I remember a small row of terraced houses to the side of Suttons (on the same side, its just grassed over now) and I am told there was a bigger house which stood where the newer dormers stand now on the other side. Was the entrance to the pit anywhere near here or not? I know Lea Green Pit was further over, sort of behind the Boars Head. Also I don't suppose anyone has any photos of this area do they?
Many thanks in anticipation.

The Prop and Pony used to be the offices for the colliery. The field with the football field on is owned by Suttons, they also owned the land where the new houses are on Sherdley road. They used to own the land where Sutton arms stands but they sold it to the brewery as long as they named the pub after them.

Thanks Predator, you know that mine shaft you talk about, would that have been part of Lea Green colliery do you think?

Thanks DJGAZZA, i remember the Prop and Pony being used as a pay office or something ,but would you know if it was for all the local pits? I had a relative who worked at Bold colliery and he used to go there to pick up a pay advice or something like that.

My grandad worked at Lea Green colliery and he got his wages from there so it looks like it was. Also I think they were all interlinked, I'm sure Bold was linked to Sutton Manor and Clock Face. Maybe even Parkside

Ah right, I wasn't sure whether they were linked or not.
Thanks for that DJGAZZA

I dont think they were interlinked at all. They used to avoid eachother due to ventilation, air locks and safety, Lea Green and Manor went near to each other, but they made sure they never met up.

Sutton Manor used to have a landing that drew methane from Clock face, well after clock closed. It fed the boiler room and the excess was sold to ICI in widnes.I'm not sure whether ,before it closed,a tunnel was sent from Bold to Manor to facilitate future coal extraction from Bold's reserves.Although the many pits may not have been intentionally connected,I've heard tell of Manor colliers hearing say Lea Green colliers hewing coal a bit below or above the face or vice versa.

On the Ravenhead Greenway, just before you come to the road leading to Pilkington's Greengate works, there's an intriguing device enclosed in a small compound. It appears to be designed to burn off methane from the old colliery (Alexandra?), and is probably operated by a timer. I've been past a few times when it's been running. It seems an awful waste of a potentially useful resource, though.
