Any help gratefully received to sort out the following:
I have a William Frederick Woods b 1819 (not sure where) a tailor married in Farnworth to
Alice Crompton 1838. (On a later census he is married to a Mary b 1825) lived at 32 Warrington Road Prescot
Children John b 1841 Mary b 1843 Robert b 1846 Alice b 1848 James b 1856
William F's Father is down as Thomas, coal dealer and the only one I can find on the LDS has Richard, merchant as Father.
2 Grandchildren living with them in 1881
William Garner Woods b 1866
Mary E Woods b 1875
Trying to work out who their parents were and where they had gone.
William (Grandson)watchmaker married Elizabeth Case Eccleston Parish Church 1885. He was living at 33 Hardy St and she was at 12 Peter St. Confusingly, on his marriage cert, he has William F down as his Father not Grandfather. Was that common practice?
One interesting snippet I found in the newspapers was that William F was fined for selling ale from his house on a Sunday!
Confused? so am I! But I need to work out who William G and Mary belonged to as it is William G that is my GGrandfather so I'm missing a brick in my wall as to who his Parents were.

I can see what you mean here Ace, going through the lan opc I get the same thing, It may be a transcription error but I think you will have to send for a certificate to prove it.
This is what I can find
William Frederick WOODS baptised 20 dec 1815 St Mary Prescot to Richard Woods, Abode Prescot, Occupation Merchant.
Also William WOODS b 15 April 1802 at St Mary Prescot to Thomas Cabinet Maker and Alice
(this birth date seems too early though)
then
Marriage1 to Alice CROMPTON 18 dec 1838 St Wilfred Farnworth grooms father THOMAS WOODS
Marriage2 to Mary RIGBY 6 Feb 1848 St Mary/StHelen grooms father RICHARD WOODS
I would say that you should send for the Alice Crompton marriage to check the details, grooms fathers name may have been transcribed wrongly, if it doesnt agree then you may have to rethink but this is the thing that confuses the situation, everything else fits.
This is the rest of what I could find
William and Alice had 3 children John b1841
Mary b Sept 1843 St Mary Prescot Father William,a tailor, Mother Alice
Robert b1846 (registered in Jan/Feb/March but in Warrington?) so think hes Alices as I found a death for her 19 Jan 1846 buried in St Mary Prescot age 36 abode prescot
You can see them in 1841 in Parrs Square Prescot(now Highfield Place)
Incidentally Alices birth was 23 April 1807 Bapt 17 May 1807 St Mary Prescot daugh of John and Mary Crompton (occupation Taylor, Prescot)
Their other children Joseph B 9 Oct 1805 and Elizabeth B 15 April 1810
Their marriage 13 Feb 1805 St Mary Prescot
John CROMPTON, Tailor, bachelor, Prescot
Mary BLACKLEDGE, spinster, Prescot
Witness Alice Blackledge, John Byron
they were married by licence by william Ellam, minister which was quicker, more convenient, more discreet and thought to confer social prestige(looks like quicker fits here)
Now Mary RIGBY and William had two more childer Alice B 1848 and James B 1856 and you can find them on census in 1851 in EcclestonStreet Prescot
1861 at Snig Lane
1871 at 16 Snig Lane (william the grandson appears here age 5
1881 32 Warrington Road (as you state)
There is a death for a William F in March 1886 age 77 in Prescot (8b 529)
1891 no 13 ??? near Haughton Street, Mary a widow, Tailoress along with Mary E 16 watchmakers assist
There is a Death for Mary Woods Sep 1899 age 74 Prescot (8b 634)
A possible for Marys parents are Thomas Rigby and Harriet from Widnes he was a groom her baptism may be 1821 St Wilfred Farnworth
I will have a think about the Grandchildren again but couldnt fit them anywhere, obviously they belong either to one of the sons (Robert just disappears completely after 1861) or maybe one of the girls illegitimates(maybe Alice) Sometimes the Grandfather took on responsibilty for these...
Illegitimate children of the daughter of a family were often treated as younger children of the child’s grandparents
Marriage certificates had a place for naming the father of the bride and groom. Illegitimate individuals often left the space blank. Others would name the father if they knew him. Others would fabricate a name, usually with their mother’s maiden name (and hence their own surname), or they would name their grandfather or an uncle as their father. This, again, would hide the fact of their own illegitimacy.
Just found a marriage for Mary Elizabeth ? 1894 september St Helens parish church to William H Corns
Do you know a link with the John Woods who ran the HOLT pub at Whiston on Warrington Road?
Ive probably repeated most of yours but just in case...
(all this info is from Lan opc, parish records discs and census data)
Regards Ratty

Thank you so much for all your hard work Ratty. I'll have to take some time to go through all that and cross match with the few details that I do have. Wouldn't it be handy to have the use of the Tardis?
Not sure about John as I have been concentrating on William and his offspring. I also tend to think that the children belonged to Alice, hence the reason for putting Grandfather as Father on the marriage cert. Yet another shot in the dark I suppose!
I'm off to lose a few more hours trawling the web so thank you once again, you are a star!
Regards
Gaynor

You are welcome.
A Tardis huh, Ive tried but Ebay dont sell them.
You need more parish records really and I dont have them for Prescot, you could try Rootsweb they are helpful.
I would send for Mary Alices marriage cert, maybe she put down the right father or find the baptism record in parish records to see what that says.
Bye for now
