John Stanleys sweetshop was directly opposite St Lukes infants school , the juniors was about 50 yards further along Shaw Lane next to the church. Ste Renshalls house was the house next to the church, John Stanley ran the shop from the back of the premises the front was never open. His brother was Hector Stanley who i knew pretty well and as far as i can make out they did not have much time for one another. Hector lived in Queens Rd Prescot. Hectors son Neil took over the Kemble St shop and then he opened a shop in Eccleston St, Prescot. The shop is still there but it is now run by Asians.I can still smell the newspapers and the smells of hundreds of different kinds of sweets, the stuff you could buy with a old threepenny bit was fantastic !!! Anyone remember Annie Lolls the shop at end of Shaw Lane and Dragon Lane ?

I lived in Birch Grove which was is off Beechwood grove, Ted Mangin was the owner of the shop and shed in beechwood, Steve and Donald Orford both lived there who we used to hang about with.Bobby shadwell lived up from the Orfords near the post box. At the end of Birch grove is an entry that used lead onto a field (Crossfield road was extended onto it) across the field was johnny stanleys shop on shaw lane. The Oakes Henry,George,Keith and Slyvia lived in Windsor road.

If you knocked about with Bob Shadwell, we know each other Posted Image And in that shed was a 3/4 snooker table, but only the big lads were allowed on it. Johnny always had flat tyres on his bike, the miser wouldn't buy owt new !!

The shop on the junction of Dragon lane,Shaw lane is now a sandwich bar.The adjoining house has been empty for years, but over the past three weeks ive noticed plenty of work going on,with new windows etc and overgrown gardens cleared.Didnt old Stanley go around the wards at Whiston Hospital selling papers?

Sky, I wasn't born until 1949, however spitting Walter was around in the 50's. We children were always told to avoid him as he was a bit strange. Seemingly he was suffering from shell shock from the 1st World War.

Not only did he sell papers,he used to re-sell them as well! He started his round in the old chest hospital in Delph Lane, entered the hospital at the old porter's lodge on Warrington Road; worked his way from A block, down to K block and finally M & W blocks. If he ran out of papers during his round, he would then go back to Delph Lane, collect the read newspapers and continue his round selling second hand papers - early form of recycling?????
