I know this is about whiston and not Prescot but does any one have a picture of the papershop owned by Johnny Stanley (my mums cousin) it was near St Lukes School. Johnny used to deliver papers to whiston Hospital and rode a bike everywhere I know his dad had a shop, and I believe his other sibblings did as well Ruth b 1906, Bertha 1910, Hector b1916. Gertrude b1916. any info about the shops or Pictures would would be great.
Joe

I think everybody who lived around there (Kingsway for me), or was ever a pateient or worked at the hospital will remember Johnny Stanley.

I remember going into his shop as far back as the mid-1960's when I attended St Lukes, and I hope somebody has pictures as requested

We used to call him Jack Stanley. We often walked to school (St Lukes) and called at the shop to buy sweets and marbles with our bus fare.

His brother Hector had the shop in Kemble street, his son took over and its now the newsagents in Eccleston Street at the oposite end to the church, just pop in and ask him, its worth a try.
We should all pop out at the weekend and photograph were we live for the future

Talking about St Lukes does anyone remember a chap in Beechwood Grove who sold sweets in his garden shed we used to go at Dinner time, Remember the packs of three cigs John Stanley told us to clear off one day when we asked for a pack, yes we also bought sweets and Ollie's, Happy Days

Gillie, I remember the back-yard shop but can't recall the owner, do you remember Robert Shadwell from that area he lived quite near to it.

Gillie,and Les

I was talking to one of my mates tonight, he lived in Shaw lane, in fact the first house after St Lukes, his name is Alan Renshall, him and his brother Steve used to frequent the shed very often,I asked him about the bloke with the shed, he tells me his name was Ted Mangin, he had two sheds the small one he sold sweets and pop, and the bigger shed had a half size snooker table in,it was a shilling for twenty minutes on the table and a penny for a glass of pop.Alan said all the locals used to be in there,Henry and Kenny Oaks, and all the other lads from round there. :thumb:

The shop opposite St Lukes was Johnny Stanley's papershop.

I remember the larger shed in Ted Mangin's back with the big snooker table, but I was never big enough to play on it! Might have only been half size, but it seemed big to me !

I remember Stanleys, when I was a kid in the 70's there was a woman owner - John's daughter? - nice lady knew my dad well, Jimmy Oakes - brother of Keith mentioned above who was a milkman for years!
