I am carrying out research into the life of John Thomas Davies VC who, although born in Birkenhead, lived in St Helens from when he was a small child until his death in 1955. His widow, Beatrice, died in 1976. I know that he had a son, Alan, who died in 1943 and a daughter about whom I know nothing. I would very much like to contact any surviving members of the family (perhaps related through his siblings) or indeed anyone who knew the Davies family.
John Davies has the unusual distinction of being possibly the only man to be awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross (for his gallantry in France in March 1918) who survived and was decorated with the VC by the King. He was presumed killed in the VC action but had actually been taken prisoner and survived the war in a PoW camp in Silesia. He spent most of his working life employed at the Ravenhead Brick & Tile Works.
