I used to be fascinated by the different tobaccos on display in his window in Church Street. Various types of plugs, twists and shags which you could cut and rub yourself or purchase ready-rubbed. Also one called Negro Head which would now have to be called something else. There was always a selection of clay pipes in the window, ranging from a very short one right up to a Churchwarden. The shop became an outfitter's when the tobacco trade declined, but retained the figure above the facade which I'm sure we all remember.

just before i left the pit,a lot of colliers were chewing an american baccy,full of dates, it tasted terrible,..

Seems that chewing tobacco in various forms is now a major health problem among American teenagers. Also, what I didn't know is that chewing tobacco was widely used by American baseball players some years ago, and that Babe Ruth eventually died of a throat cancer caused by the habit.
