Whittles was half way up Duke Street on the left

Whittles was a pork butchers ,next to Mrs Howards chip shop on Knowsley Road
(facing Ellison Drive) and further down was Roberts Pie shop, later to become
a betting shop. circa: 1940/50s.

Looking at the widening gap in the poll, I wonder whether all the Pimblett's votes are coming from starry-eyed expats who remember Pimblett's pies as they used to be. Surely, unless Poole's are really dire, nobody who has actually had a Pimmies lately could, in all conscience, vote for them.

I wonder if griffin recalls a pie shop known as " Jackies" pies in the
Dentons Green area.

I lived in Greenfield Road, and Jackies pork butchers had premises farther up on the left. They had two separate shops with a yard in between. I don't remember the pies specifically, but I'm sure they made them to use up the less presentable parts of the pig.

For what it is worth here's my twopennorth on St Helens pies. When I was working in College Street I would go to Mercers in Baldwin Street where they sold the best pies, I loved their steak pies even though it was minced and runny, I have never rated Pimbletts or Sammy Lievesleys as they were too peppery for my taste.

Don't get me wrong I love a good pie, when I am in St Helens I buy a couple of dozen pork pies from Burchalls in Westfield Street and bring them back to Scotland where they have a devoted fan base of English settlers who miss a good pie, Scottish pies are not in the same league.

I have a friend who brings me pies from Pooles because he lives in Billinge, they are not the best pies however they taste better than Pimbletts to my palate. I have been buying pies from Morrisons since they bought out Safeways but they don't seem to bake them right in Stranraer and they give me indigestion. At least you can still buy a decent pie in St Helens.

P.S. with regard to Mercers I remember it was owned by the owner of the Pets Emporium in College Street who if I remember correctly committed suicide, unless you know better!

Why is there only two options in the poll, there was/is a few pie shops in St Helens?

I've never heard of Pooles.

Poole's pies are to be found in Wigan, along with Greenhalgh's and numerous others. Best steak pies here are from Greenall's in Duke Street, and best pork pies from Burchall's in Westfield Street. I noticed Sammy Lievesley's shop in Charles Street was closed down. I don't know if they're still going elsewhere. Anybody who liked Pimblett's pies years ago should cherish their memories, and never try one now, because they're shite.

It's ll explained in the original link

which seems a bit pointless now in view of recent events

Hollands frozen pies are good, I bought some for boxing night when we have a bit of a do, everyone likes them and I can buy them a few weeks before so no rushing round at the last minute.

Due to Trading Standards requirements we now have two types of pie involving meat and potatoes.
Meat and Potato and Potato and meat. Categorised by the relative amounts of each ingredient. I don't think there is a spcified standard for onion content :D :D
