Harold Stott's showrooms, which were reasonably swish at one stage, were at the top of Westfield Street on the left as you approached the Sefton Arms.

I once went in there to read the meters. One was upstairs, and I was surprised to see that the upper floor was derelict with broken windows. There were pigeons nesting in it. Another meter was in the ladies' toilet, and somebody had to go in front to check if it was occupied. Do you remember the massive brass locks, operated by an old penny, in the gents'?

The old Transport Toilets - what memories for a saturday evening on the town!

That was where all us girls underwent our transformations. I can remember leaving the house for a night out with one outfit over another (much sexier) one. Off the No.6 bus and into the Transport Loos. Quick change and stuff the outer clothing into your bag and out would come the make-up; then the backcombing and the hair-lacquer would complete the look!!!

If my mother had ever seen the final result, I would have been grounded for the duration of my teenage years!

This sort of thing still goes on. Girls leave their houses in Donnybrook looking all demure, then dive behind the Statoil garage and emerge looking like little tarts, before heading into town. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Anyone remember Alf's in Knowsley Road, I think where Chan's is now? Coal fired heaters and fish and chips to die for!
Also the term "split" seems to be peculiar to St Helens only? I remember asking for one outside Leeds Utd and nearly getting assaulted! The young girl took umbrage.....I wonder why?

Think Alf's was once were Crispy Cod is now ... bit greasy for mine I thought ... remember being chased out of a Wigan Chippy when I asked the woman behind the counter if she had a large split!

Yes it was opposite the Bear's Paw in Ormskirk Street (probably about where the Baby Gazette shop was - it is now a furniture shop)
