Nimrod, sorry for the confusion. You clicked on the 'Report' button when you wanted to add your post to the topic. This meant that what you intended to post was sent to the moderators ('Report' is a 'complaints' function). To avoid this in future, please use the ADDREPLY button.

I see that the proposed housing development on the burgies has been unanamously rejected. Well done! :)

Acording to T.C.Barker and J.R.Harris burgie was the name given to coal which was toopoor to sell and was dumped, this was the begining of the burgie banks i.e. the rubbish dumpted from the Russhie Park seam however over the years, in St Helens, it has become the name for the wast sand from the glass polishing process,

Ray has also "confessed" to sliding down the Broken Bottle banks on a tin tray. I do not think that we should take Ray French literally, he usually exaggerates a little for effect. Look at his wonderful foreword to Dennis Whittle's book on Duggie Greenall.

There are is an Environmental Factsheet E/08 produced by the St Helens Council some years ago, which is headed Sites of Community Wildlife Interest. The Haresfinch Burgy Bank is listed 2W5 as being 16.07 hecacres.

For those who would like to read about "Emerging Ecosystems in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas" by Ian Douglas. University of Manchester, it can be downloaded from the Council site.

For those who want a laugh, and why not, read Ray French. Uni. of Leeds foreword on Duggie Greenall.

I believe the farm belonged to Sandiland Farnworth, who was a farmer and coal dealer.
