Was that Carr Mill Social Club what I remember as the Cat's Whisker?

Hello Oaker - that was the St.Helens version of Blackpool! Funfair, amusement arcade, lakeside trainrides, paddling pool, rollerskating rink, cafe during the day/nightclub by night!
Oh what the young of today have missed in the past!!!!!

I think the cafe building became the 'Sands Nightclub' if my memory isn't playing time tricks on me again!!!!!

Saw a picture of the pleasure park's railway filled with 50's kids in a book recently, apparently they had a minature railway that ran around Carr Mill dam and a helter skelter and roller rink!

that's right claire
the miniature railway only ran along the side of the lake though as far as the old boat house into the woods - between the lake and Martindale Road (i think it was called that).

I can remember there was hardly any room to sit on the grass,so many people and their kids were there ,but there wasnt much money about in those days and it was a good day out for the kids because they could play in the waterfall steps that ran down from the Dam.

Slipping on the Ginny green teeth on the waterfall steps. Rolling down the hill on your side. Bluebell wood. Watching the 'big' lads climbing on the underside of the railway bridge. It never seemed to rain in those days.

It wasn't a Miniature Railway Ollie.. :P .it was a Narrow Gauge Railway, the train was a Diesel and all the carriages were open, it ran for about a 100 yards down the side of the dam and then came back, it was very popular at the time.
We used to go swimming in sandy bay on a Sunday and it was freezing cold, we had knitted costumes and when they got wet they used to sag down to your knees, :P Halcyon days....! :D

Dane ,
I used to love the "Happy Valley" as a kid ,

Nowadays when the weather is o.k (Summer) I cycle along from Earlestown in Summer and go through to Carr Mill Dam via Blackbrook and past sewage works and you come up at the side of the"Happy Valley" and then cycle round the dam. Have a drink, relax and then cycle home It's a nice easy ride and I suppose keeps me fit after a fashion ,plus nice scenery.

Do you remember that Cafe/Van that was just at the top of the road near the Happy Valley, we used to get Vimto and a packet of Savoury biscuits with a Triangle of Cheese and two Pickled Onions, or you could go across the East Lancs to Burkills Cafe and get a bag of Chips and a round of Bread for a Tanner.
