Continuing with the census and moving along Snig Lane the next address is Prescot Hall. What was and where was Prescot Hall?

Pennington Gardens, Prescot

The picture below shows Pennington Gardens in Prescot - perhaps in the 1960's?

When the old terraced houses around the Beaconsfield Street area were demolished, the houses which stood here (with a Warrington Road address, probably numbers 30-62 or so) were also demolished and the gardens planted.

I have been told that the house were single story cottages, but have never been able to lovcate any pictures of this area. Does anybody have any pictures of these "cottages"?

An interesting shot of Prescot from the air, I think taken sometime in the 1930’s.

For the non-Prescotians, the road running bottom to top to the left is Sewell Street, and just above that is Market Place

Things I found interesting…..
…the old Town Hall is still in Market Place
…the sheer number of buildings in the area where Greenall Court now stands
…not a car in sight
…Prescot Picture Palace just to the right of centre

The new Prescot Museum

I've been undertaking some research on the Hewitt watch making family of Prescot. So I was looking forward to the museum opening again on the 23rd April to see what information they had.

I went over to Prescot on Thursday morning. What a disappointment!

The museum now occupies about 30 sq ft of the library and consists of
1 glass case/shelf about 5ft long containing some pocket watches and movements
1 glass case/shelf same size with watch parts an tools
1 glass case about 2ft wide with about 4 shelves of WW1/WWII memorabilia
1 glass case as above with bits and pieces
there are a few other items on display dotted around

I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to visit.

I asked at the information desk if they had any reference material on the history of watch making in Prescot. I was taken to the reference section which had around 30 books on local history. Non about watchmaking.

The lady did comment "That's strange you would think we would have had something about watch making in the library" :-)

I was pointed in the direction of Huyton library but they have had no new additions to their reference section lately.

My question is what has happened to the 11,000 or so items in the old museum collection and where has all of the research documents and books gone?

Will we be seeing a number of Prescot clocks coming onto the market soon?

In an old post I seem to remember Potter saying that he had lodged his research material with the Museum. Where is it now?

If anyone knows I'd appreciate an update

Spleen now suitably vented

It reports on the site that he was discharged in 1917 after being wounded, eventually dying in late 1919. He is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Prescot. I am now trying to determine if his death was as a result of wounds or illness associated with his military service.

If it is, then as he died before August 1921 he should be commemorated by CWGC.

I will get a copy of his death certificate shortly, but in the meantime if anybody has any knowledge of the death of Sge Henry, or details of any current family members, would you please let me know.

I came across this picture in my files, taken some years ago before they demolished the building to make way for the housing estate.

I worked in here from 1977 to 1986, from Trainee Computer Operator through to Senior Programmer.

I also recall that when I worked as an Operator and we were on nights, then when it snowed, we would go on to the roof and throw snowballs at passers by, then hide.

Bear in mind that it was the middle of the night and most of said "passers by" were well oiled from a night out.
My late Dad who went to Prescot Grammar School in the early 1920s was besotted with the town despite living in Earlstown at the time. One of the things he told me was that Prescot was the first town in England to have electricity generation and the town owned its own power station. Can anyone confirm this?

Apparently, the Motor Car Act of 1903 introduced licencing and each licence, which cost 5/- was valid for a period of 12 months

Prescot St Mary's Burials

F0ollowing on from my Prescot Roll of Honour research, I have been looking into the history of Prescot St Mary’s Churchyard. I have a few documents from Lancashire Records Office, mainly from the 1920’s and discussing the opening of the “new” cemetery next door, and I also have a set of documents which record the correspondence between the Imperial War Graves Commission and the Sexton of the churchyard in the 1920’s though to 1937.

I live in hope that one day I will find a details map of the churchyard, giving me reference points for some of the burials I am aware of, and the CWGC map of the churchyard which only records about 23 graves, does give me some idea. Some old maps that I have show the boundaries of the churchyard before the changes made in the 1960.

But the main data that I have been analysing is that extracted from the LAN-OPC data (and reformatted for me by Dave, and the burial registers from 1900 to 1921 which I have had copied.

What this data shows is that in that relatively small churchyard, between 1665 and 1920, there were at least 41,904 burials. I say “at least” because I have incomplete data for four years in that period and obviously burials continued after 1920. Even after the “new” cemetery opened next door, burials into existing family plots continued, and I have also noted that in the churchyard there is a large stone recording that the remains from the churchyard in Houghton Street/Beaconsfield Street were brought in when that old cemetery was “re-used”.

But the 41,904 above are (for the majority anyway), named individuals with a burial date, age and some basic details.

Looking at the current churchyard, I would hazard a guess that there may be around 300 headstones in there, clearly showing the vast majority to be in unmarked graves. I suspect we will never know exactly where the vast majority of the bodies lie – and that includes quite a few members of the Nulty family, including my great grandfather who was buried somewhere there in 1933 ironic, given that he and his son, my grandfather Thomas Nulty, were both gravediggers there.

I am now about to start work on an analysis of the ages of those deceased – though I can already tell you that there is, sadly, a significant number of infants included in the total.

We all have memories but sometimes these are false or we think "Did that reallyhappen?" I don't ever remembering it raining in school summer holidays but it must have done.
Two memories from my childhood; one is a true memory but is the other?
The true one - the ferry to New Brighton stopping in mid-channel and a WWII magnetic mine bobbing about in the water.
The other memory - perhaps you can help me out with this one. T J Hughes' at the top of London Road, Liverpool. They had two buildings there - the main department store and across a side street was a two storey building with furniture and white goods. I have a vivid memory of getting in the lift in the department store and getting out of it in the other store as if the lift car went into the basement, travelled sideways under the strret and into the furniture store lift shsaft. Did it or was I just imagining it?
In the time it fas taken me to read this - another memory had emerged from the deep, dark recesses. Every time I saw Santa in TJ's grotto, he always gave me a bus conductors outfit1.

Thomas Caslin - Commemorated at last, over 90 years late!

I have today received the really, REALLY good news that CWGC have accepted Thomas Caslin of Prescot for commemoration as an official casualty of the First World War.

Thomas' full story is on my website http://www.prescot-rollofhonour.info/casualty-60-Thomas_Caslin.html but in summary, I came across him about four years ago and found that he was not officially commemorated. He died in 1919 after discharge, but having obtained his death certificate, it seemed clear to me that his death was directly attributable to his military service and so I submitted his case to the MoD for consideration. (MoD make the decision and advise CWGC if they are to commemorate the serviceman).

Today I have been advised that the submission was successful. Thomas is now on the CWGC Roll of Honour at http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=75229760

I have provided evidence of is burial at Prescot St Mary's Churchyard. CWGC will now deal with Knowsley Council to see if the grave can be located (I can't find it) and if not, then hopefully, a stone with the inscription 'Buried Elsewhere in This Churchyard' will be erected.

I'll keep this thread updated with any developments, but tonight as we approach the time of national remembrance, let's all raise a glass to the memory of Thomas Caslin.

We WILL remember them.

Being a nosey sod I had a look at where it was bottled. I was very surprised to find out it was bottled in Cronton. Does anyone have a recollection of a natural spring in that area? It is in Alder Lane which goes onto Water Lane -bit of a clue there. The only local spring water that I knew was the iron water, and I don't think anyone would pay for that!! If you are still interested it was:
in white painted letters on a dark background. It was there, like me, in the early 1940's, in 6 feet high letters and easily seen from the main Warrington road. You can still see the faint outline of an 8ft. square board on the gable end of the house.
In those days the BICC company would give a short blast on a steam hooter at 0750, again at 0755 and a long blast at 0800hrs every week day. The doleful hooters could be heard from our house a mile away from the factory.
Imagine the complaints you'd get now, but in those days the culture was about working your socks off.
Looking over the bare windswept demolition site of the BICC factory, as I did a few years ago, I could still hear those hooters on the wind, calling the faithful to the alters of sweated labour and industrial mayhem.

Many of us will be familiar with the usual pictures of the watch factory, usually with the name emblazoned on the Gable End and with the Post Office on the corner of Albany Road just visible (now the Sing Ping Chinese Restaurant).

But this picture from Geo. Hemingway's Prescot Gazeteer of 1901 was a new one to me. Note that where the Post Office eventually came to be, there appears to be a pile of building material.

I did read somewhere that when the Watch Factory was built, some workers houses were also erected, as was the norm at the time. Would this have been Albany Road, Grosevnor Road, etc? Does anybody know?

The factory was opened in 1893, though not completed for another few years.

Prescot Roll of Honour - 95 Years Ago Today

95 years ago today, on 9th September 1916, the Prescot Civic War memorial was unveiled at the junction of West Street and Church Street, Prescot.

Dedicated at the height of the Somme battles, it was one of the first civic memorials in the UK.

On the same day, my great Uncle, James Nulty of Hill Street, Prescot, was killed in action while engaged in the Battle of Ginchy with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

James Nulty and over 300 other men of Prescot who fell in the Great War are commemorated on my website at www.prescot-rollofhonour.info which also gives details of the memorial unveiling and dedication

Wondering if anybody has any thoughts on where Scotch Row(e) could have been in Prescot 1841. I did wonder about Scotchbarn Lane .........

Maybe a Streets and Places List for Prescot would be a good Idea - along the lines of the one for St.Helens.

ooops - my mistook . After all that, it turned out to be in St.Helens after all. Somewhere in the Liverpool Road, Gin Lane, Eccleston Street on the North side of Liverpool Road.

Prescot Roll of Honour - Latest Updates 02/09/11

I have made a few updates to the site today and thought you might be interested in checking them out.

Firstly, I have added three new casualties to the site, local men whose death I have only recently found out about. Thanks to Le200 for pointing one of these out.

The second update is the inclusion of images from the Parish Church burial registers for those men who are buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, usually having died from wounds received whilst serving overseas. These images have come from research at Lancashire Record Office.

The final update is to the details of Robert Arthur France, including a copy of a letter he wrote to his 3 year old son in July 1916, about 8 months before he was killed in action. Thanks to the family of Robert, I found that this son, also Robert, went on to be highly decorated in the Second World War and details of this have also been included.

Link to the site in the footer below. Enjoy !!!

Prescot Burials 1901 - 1921

I now have some 500 pages of entries from the Prescot Burial registers. The first pages overlap with Dave's data on the other thread, as they start in 1897, but I have through up to 21st February 1921.

I haven't transcribed these, and probably won't for a while. I using them for a project I have "bubbling under", but if anybody wants me to do look ups, them I'm more than happy - but you'll have to give me an approximate date cos I'm not lookling through 500 pages for anybody, except perhaps Dave !!

Around mid-October 1919, the registers start to include the home address, rather than just the town as previous entries did.
