The fate of 1/5 South Lancashire Regiment - 30 November 1917, Cambrai

    PSHistory
    By PSHistory,
Hi there,   I am currently working on an article relating to the fate of 1/5 South Lancs on 30 November 1917 at Villers Guislain (Cambrai).   Specifically I am trying to identify those that were captured and who spent the rest of the war as POWs.   The identification is quite simple as these can be gained from the Red Cross POW files now available online.   I'd like to ask if any of the forum members had a relative who was one of those captured on that day and if you have any photos or maybe be even letters/post cards from them whilst they were in captivity you would be prepared to share? Or even any stories you might know about their time as a POW and eventual return..   My current estimate is that around 40% of those captured came from St.Helens (200 +/-) and so the consquences that day would have had a profound impact on the town. Is anybody aware of any reports in the newspapers at the time? Officially notification of the soldiers as being 'missing' was only provided in Jan 1918.   I am hoping to have the article written up in time for the Centenary and it will be available, free of charge, on my personal history website....www.pshistory.com   If any of the members have any infomation they are prepared to share please feel free to conact me through this forum, through my website or my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PSHistoryPage/   Many thanks Paul Sutton, PSHistory

Heart of Glass are looking for men to take part in a St Helens event. We are looking for men to take part in a St Helens event as performers. We would like to hear from men of all ages (16+) who may be interested in performing as singers - whether you have lots or absolutely no experience. In May 2017 George Street will be brought to life with amazing vocal music, in a new piece by artist, composer and choir leader Verity Standen. This is not a choir as you know it. No experience is necessary. Come along to Heart of Glass in the Beecham's Building, 6pm on 11th or 12th April to meet Verity and find out more. Pimmies Pies included to keep you going. To let us know you're interested, or ask any questions contact Suzanne Dempsey Sawin on Suzanne@heartofglass.org.uk or 01744 623290 (Monday - Thursday) For more information including rehearsal dates please click here
