Hi Guys, I have a marriage record for my GGM's second marriage. Am I to presume that the groom is John?

Yes, Paula. It's the latinized version of John in the form 'Joannes', as opposed to the more common 'Johannes'. Church latin, and priests' command of latin, could be somewhat hit-and-miss. The '-em' ending is simply because it's the accusative case - the register probable had some latin version of 'on <date>, I married Alice .. and John .. '.

(Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs on the language there.)

Thanks, helpful as always. Haven't seen the register proper, just the entry on the St Helens, marriages CD. What a godsend that is! I was aware of a relationship but not a marriage. Must get the certificate now.
