In the late 1980's early 1990's in Corporation Street, there used to be what I think was a derelict sewing factory attached onto the Gamble Institute and the restuarant lower down. It is now the slip road inbetween those two buildings. That is where during that particular period the Council moved a vast amount of documents, plans etc., for "storage" and not long after they had been moved there was a fire and everything destroyed.

I do wonder what were the documents.

Just been asking other half about that building and he reckons in about 1956/57 it was used as a woodwork class for the boys from Central Modern. Don Gullick( of Saints fame ) was one of the teachers there at the time.

Cassini Maps now are doing a series which are called Then and Now Maps it consists of 4 maps showing the development and the history of the places over four eras, from the 1870's to present day.

They do cost £8.99 but are worth it.

There is one available that covers St Helens and Wigan areas.
