Somebody suggested a Cowley horror story thread.

My starter. The sadistic nature of a certain Latin teacher by the name of "Flash" Clifton in the early fifties and the "First Fifteen" culture whereby everything revolved around rugby union

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

'Flash' was still there in the 60s and didn't change a bit! I was never much good at Latin but some things you could never forget such as the difference between active and passive. He took great delight in instrucing anybody who got it wrong with two slaps across the head, the first accompanied by the commentary "I hit you -active" and the second, "you are hit - passive". Were those the good old days? I wonder.

There was an art teacher, Brady I think was his name. Every lesson he'd cuff some unfortunate across the neck for using bad technique.

To me it's a miracle that we weren't all totally brutalised by it all into being just like the bullying teachers

"Bill" Brady was a geography teacher, Alan. wasn't "Fuzzy" Fairhurst the art master then Norman Crewe?

An afterthought; didn't Brady leave Cowley and go to a girls' school? As Quasimodo said, "Notre Dame rings a bell".

It might have been Fairhurst, I only did art in first year. The one I'm thinking about was quite large with a mop of gingerish hair and lived in Kiln Lane.

Another anecdote-re-the fearsome Bill' Brady. As well as taking the geography classes, there was a period when he supervised some sporting activities(1953) On one occasion, an unfortunate first former managed to lose a cricket ball and Brady knocked him to the ground and kicked him in the ribs. We all stood around ashen faced. The chap at the end of his boot was called Ally Gledhill, I suspect he still has the bruises.

My last year at High School was 1999/2000 and until then I hadn't received a single detention; I was always a good kid at school. Then around this time six years ago I received two detentions for the huge crime of staying indoors at dinner time away from the harsh winter cold.

Seriously, I received two dententions for hiding from the women at the doors because I didn't want to freeze my arse off.

Flash was still there in the 70s. I was one of the recipients of his method of teaching the difference between the active and passive tenses, although rather than a slap around the head, it was a kick up the a**e for me.............twice.

Also remember Dan Rodden's tale about saving some aircraft mechanic's sight after he'd spilled some acid or somesuch on himself - "I just pi**ed in his face, worked a treat.."

Still remember most of the teachers - I was there from 1971-76

I was at Cowley from 1959-65. PAMorley or Kong was strict but when my Dad died in 1959 he took me to the Lakes for nothing on the school camp and was always kind. Caned me several times too!!!

I left Cowley in 1960. In my final year I'd developed a talent for impersonating PAM's standard "You boy!" which I employed whenever I was near a noisy group of first years (or thirds as we called them in those days) just for the fun of seeing the terror in their eyes
